What To Ask Your Birth Photography Clients In Their Client Questionnaire | Northern Virginia Birth Photographer

June 23, 2015 Emily Gerald

I have had a lot of questions lately surrounding how to prepare to shoot a birth, and ultimately the more information I can get form my clients ahead of time, the easier its going to be for me to successfully capture their babies birth story. Today, I wanted to specifically talk about what I ask my clients in their client questionnaire.

This is something I send out to them before I meet with them in person to get as much information as possible, so that during our in person meeting we can spend more time getting to know each other and clarifying any questions vs me just asking basic questions that can be covered ahead of time. Here are some of my must-ask questions:

1. Their name + phone number, their spouses name + phone number, and their home address.

2. Their Estimated date of delivery.

3. Their midwife/OB practices name.

4. Is there anyone else I can contact if either your spouse or midwife is our of reach? If so, what is their name and number?

5. Where are you planning to deliver and what is the address?

6. Who will your birthing team consist of?

7. Is there anyone you plan to have in the room that is not a part of your birthing team? (your mom, sister, etc)

8. Is there anything specific you do NOT wish to have captured during labor and delivery?

9. Is there anything specific you do NOT wish to have shared via the photographers portfolio or for marketing use?

10. Do you have a written birth plan? If so, is the photographer mentioned so other birth team members will be aware of their presence?

11. Do you know your baby's gender?

12. Does your baby have a name?

13. Do you plan to bottle or breast feed?

14. Is this your first baby? If not, please tell me about any prior birth's you have had.

15. Is there anything else you would like to make the photographer aware of?

Once I have the client questionnaire, I save one in a designated folder in my email that I can access from my phone and print two copies. One that will go in my camera bag right before my on-call period begins and the other that will remain in their client folder! What do you ask your clients in your questionnaire?

instagram vs reality. I guess this is the perfect depiction of why my posting average is once per month. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Life continues to get busier and busier with these two, my business and Mark’s practice. We survived the holiday’s, our first broken bone, and my busiest month of shooting since maternity leave. The babies are full blown toddlers now-walking, talking, and tantruming (is that a word?) and they’re keeping us on our toes. My goal for the new year: share more of what you want to see and based on what you guys loved last year that means more of our day to day with two babies. Also, when do I have to stop calling them babies? 😩
At least we all agree on the favorites of 2018! Happy New Year!
It’s been a busy month of new babies around here and peeks haven’t been posted as often as I’d like but this gem from today’s session had to be shared with the instagram world! Marco gave me the sweetest smiles, he could almost give me baby fever!😍
Things I don’t want to forget: having to dress them up for a picture in their Christmas outfit before Christmas, bribing them with snacks to get them to sit still and maybe smile (that didn’t work), and ultimately getting the best picture when you tell them to give each other a kiss. Lou’s red cast is the perfect accessory, and today she started walking with her cast on. It’s as if she doesn’t even realize it’s there, going about her business toddling around. At church, someone told us how beautiful our girls were (I mean, of course I think they’re both beautiful), and at dinner they had everyone laughing at their crazy antics. They loved the bows that came on the gifts more than the paper or boxes or presents inside. The babies and mama all got new vacuums, but by far the best part of Christmas was their joy, specifically in eating way too many carbs way past their bedtime for three nights in a row! Merry Christmas friends! #twins #merrychristmas
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night. ❤️
Bowman was the sweetest baby model for his session today. He slept the entire time, even through diaper changes and swaddling, and even got his picture taken with his older fur siblings Daisy & Duke (who were the most well behaved and excited older siblings I’ve met in a while)! I still can’t get over how much hair he has, did any of your babes have this much hair when they were born? 😍 .
